About this experience
Located in the heart of Paris, Chapelle Expiatoire was built on the former Madeleine cemetery – the original burial place of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette. The monument was commissioned by Louis XVIII, brother to Louis XVI, in honor of the Restoration and in memory of the Royal family.
You will be welcomed by the somber entrance and make your way to the chapel through the courtyard or galleries enclosing it on either side. All of which isolate the chapel from the world just outside its walls and create a serene oasis.
Designed in French Neo-Classical style, the chapel features a domed space formed by three coffered half-domed apses, two of which contain marble statues of the King and Queen in exaltation.
