Step into the world of Musée Jean-Jacques Henner, the Renaissance-inspired Symbolist master.
What you'll do
The Jean-Jacques Henner Museum was created by the painter’s niece Marie Henner in 1921.
The museum includes over 130 portraits, biblical, mythological and landscapes by the artist. You’ll also find approximately 1,000 sketches, documents, and souvenirs.
Henner’s style approached Symbolism and was in contrast to the Realist movement. He was deeply influenced by the painting of the Italian Renaissance. The museum includes drawings and sketches that follow the artist’s evolution and provides you with an understanding of his process.
Did you know?
Henner won the Grand Prix de Rome for painting in 1858 with Adam and Ėve finding Abel’s body.
Henner was a sought-after portrait painter and was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor.
Henner’s paintings can be found at Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and The Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia as well as other museums.
