Musée Port Royal des Champs
Discover 17th-century abbey life at Musée Port-Royal-des-Champs
What you'll do
Take a trip back in time and discover what life was like for the residents of a 17th-century abbey.
The museum features paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries and engravings featuring portraits and religious life.
Check out the paintings of masters Philippe de Champaigne and Jean Restout. You can stroll the grounds of the abbey’s ruins, visit a 13th-century dovecote and the building (17th century) with its ‘small schools’ that house the museum's collection.
Did you know?
Jansenism was a Catholic theological movement that emphasized the concept of original sin, human vice and the need for divine grace.
The Abbaye de Port-Royal des Champs was noted for its conflict with the French monarchy and was destroyed, by order of the King, in 1711.
Works by Philippe de Champaigne and Jean Restout can be found at the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, NY.
